Midnight Pharmacist
The contractor shall provide pharmaceutical services to VA patients seen at the Birmingham Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
a. These services shall include the dispensing of pharmaceuticals to inpatients and out patients during 8pm to 8am. The functions of the pharmacist in charge include processing, dispensing and issuing prescriptions to eligible patients. This includes directing workload and staff during non-administrative hours.
b. The pharmacist must have a thorough working knowledge of medication management system and pharmacy policy and procedures. Making professional decisions concerning the policies that affect patient care.
c. Pharmacist must have a complete understanding and knowledge of unit dose and IV medications and systems/protocols.
d. The pharmacist is responsible for verifying orders in the electronic medical record and processing for patient or area of use. Checks and verifies all orders for technical accuracy to insure items being dispensed corresponds to medication and dose ordered when processed by pharmacy technician.
e. Pharmacist must have a working knowledge of pharmacy automation, including Pyxis delivery system and Talyst unit dose system.
f. All information concerning VA beneficiaries shall be kept confidential and shall not be disclosed to any person, except as authorized in writing and according to all applicable laws, policies and regulations.
g. Adverse drug events will be reported by the contracted pharmacist of to the Birmingham VA Medical Center’s pharmacy administrative staff. Adverse drug events include dispensing errors, drug allergies, and adverse drug reactions.
h. Pharmaceutical care provided to beneficiaries under this contract shall meet all standards applicable to Medicaid recipients in the state where the services are provided and standards set forth in the current JCAHO accreditation manual for Pharmaceutical Services.
i. Contractor shall provide all required background information needed to verify the licensed Pharmacist’s credentials.
j. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 40lbs., and bending/stooping. Work is performed in the pharmacy, where there is potential to exposure to communicable diseases.
